Telemedicine Demand Increases After Holidays

More and more telemedicine is becoming a way to get convenient healthcare when you don’t want to head to the doctor’s office for an appointment and waste time in the waiting room. Telemedicine was originally created as a way to treat patients in remote places, far from healthcare facilities or in areas with a shortage of medical professionals. Telemedicine is still being used in these situations and it’s increasingly becoming a convenient way to receive medical care from your home or office.

 

It is especially becoming popular during and after holidays.  Doctor on Demand, for example, had a 25% spike above expected volume on Black Friday 2016.  Another telemedicine site, Avizia, had their busiest days of the year right after Thanksgiving and Christmas last year. People are becoming more and more aware of telehealth and are using it for minor health issues, urgent care, chronic conditions and other problems that can be treated virtually. Doctors and practitioners can see the patient virtually by use of phones or computer screens and are able to make diagnoses and prescribe medication. 

 

Also impacting the rise of telemedicine today is the expanding field of mobile health. Now with the variety of mobile health apps and new mobile medical devices that are consumer-friendly, people use technology to monitor and track their health. According to eVisit, simple home-use medical devices that can take vitals and diagnose ear infections, monitor glucose levels, or measure blood pressure let patients gather needed medical information for a doctor’s diagnosis, without going into the doctor’s office. That is where telemedicine is headed. It may be worth a try to experience telemedicine next time you don’t feel like going to the doctor’s office.
